There is risk involved in this trade but you need to take that risk to have a shot at a championship - but the number 1 priority is maximizing the chance that we sign one tier 1 FA this year + one next year, or two tier 1 FA’s next year. You all are just self loathing Knicks fans that can’t see the bigger picture. KP+Melo+two tier 1 FA’s automatically competes for a championship - why would two stars not want to save the NYK and all the glory that comes with that. There are going to be a lot of tier 1 FA’s taking 1 and 1 deals and the ability to add two max contracts next year to a core of KP and Melo is nothing to sniff at. That is a much clearer path to a championship then hoping that a #5 or #12 draft pick is going to take us to the promised land.
We do this all without giving up more draft picks. If we strikeout, we re-load and try for a pair of stars next year. Even Dwight for a 1 year deal (not tier 1 but serviceable and he might just think highly enough of himself to take one) would be fine with me.
It’s a risk, but not an unreasonable risk. If this trade even marginally increases the probability that we get a LeBron, Durant, Batum, Whiteside this year than it is clearly worthwhile. I am fairly certain that many of the mega stars in this league would be very interested in playing with Melo and Rose.
